From 00:00:00 to 00:00:23 Okay, here's the next question. Please tell us the stories of our births. Okay. Well, let's see. Kelly was born October 26, 1984. From 00:00:23 to 00:00:32 I was not feeling good for at least a month, maybe longer. I felt like I was having a heart attack. From 00:00:32 to 00:00:38 I just, we were at the cabin. I had to sleep in the chair. You had terrible reflexes. From 00:00:38 to 00:00:50 Oh, God, I was just... And so two weeks before Kelly was born, I went for a checkup. And this is still, remember, we were in Dream Lane. From 00:00:50 to 00:00:59 And the doctor, the hospital was Penrose Community that's right there on Academy. Now it's Peak Vista. And I went to the doctor who was... From 00:00:59 to 00:01:14 It was like three blocks from the house. Dr. Stringfellow, who was right across the street. And I got in there and he goes, "You're going into the hospital." And I go, "What?" Well, you'd been diagnosed with sort of gestational diabetes and toxemia a couple weeks. From 00:01:14 to 00:01:17 Another diabetes, just toxemia. Just toxemia, okay. From 00:01:17 to 00:01:25 And he said, "You're going." I said, "Okay, I'll go walk." No, you're not even walking across the street. You're going right into the hospital. From 00:01:25 to 00:01:40 So this was a Friday called Jeff. He comes and gets me. We go into the hospital. And then Dr. Stringfellow says, "Well, I'm going elk hunting for the weekend." It was deer hunting. From 00:01:40 to 00:01:43 Or deer hunting. I'm going hunting for the weekend. And you hadn't eaten. From 00:01:43 to 00:01:53 I hadn't eaten in over 24 hours because I just didn't feel good at all. And he goes, "So when I get back on Monday, we'll have this baby." We'll reduce the baby. From 00:01:53 to 00:02:01 And I'm going, "So they bring me mashed potatoes, turkey, something like that." And I start to put a thing of mashed potatoes. From 00:02:01 to 00:02:03 He leaves. Yeah, he leaves. From 00:02:03 to 00:02:06 It's about an hour later. It's five, five o'clock, six o'clock, something like that. From 00:02:06 to 00:02:21 Start to put a bite of mashed potatoes in my mouth and in comes his partner, Phil Schmidt. And Phil goes, "Have you eaten anything?" And I go, "Nope." He goes, "Good. We're going to induce you." I've got too many patients to deal with tonight. From 00:02:21 to 00:02:25 I've got two other ladies I'm inducing at the same time. This is going to be a long weekend. From 00:02:25 to 00:02:27 I want to get you guys out of the way. I don't want any problems. From 00:02:27 to 00:02:36 Right. You're not going to get any... I distinctly remember him saying, "You're not going to get any better waiting until Monday." The best thing is to get this baby out of the way. From 00:02:36 to 00:02:39 I thought that was a great answer. That was a great answer. From 00:02:39 to 00:02:45 And he said, "You're going to be able to pick which day she's born." Now, this was the 26th. From 00:02:45 to 00:02:48 Well, we didn't know it was a she. No, we didn't know. From 00:02:48 to 00:02:50 But he said, "You'll be able to..." We didn't know the gender. From 00:02:50 to 00:02:58 No. He said, "But you'll be able to pick which day," which meant the baby was going to be born very close to midnight. From 00:02:58 to 00:03:01 So, they induce... This is like four o'clock in the afternoon. From 00:03:01 to 00:03:04 No, it was five o'clock to six. That's what we just already said, too. From 00:03:04 to 00:03:07 That's what you said. Yeah, because it was late. From 00:03:07 to 00:03:13 And, you know, waited, waited. They had heart monitors on me. From 00:03:13 to 00:03:17 Baby's not doing great, you know, but... So, they, you know, keep up and up and... From 00:03:17 to 00:03:20 Up in the... 11, 57. From 00:03:20 to 00:03:25 To make you come to class. Kelly and Fowler was born. From 00:03:25 to 00:03:27 And she was... Skinny. From 00:03:27 to 00:03:31 She was failure to thrive. She was low sugar. From 00:03:31 to 00:03:35 And we didn't know all of this. Because I was not in good shape. From 00:03:35 to 00:03:40 I was kind of bleeding a lot. Things you don't want to know, but I just said it. From 00:03:40 to 00:03:43 I was not in good shape. And about... From 00:03:43 to 00:03:49 You know what happened then. I just know that it wasn't until about six o'clock in the morning. From 00:03:49 to 00:03:57 In comes John Gennrich. And we hadn't called him to say, "I was going to have a baby." You interviewed doctors back then ahead of time. From 00:03:57 to 00:04:04 And we, I think, had told him that we wanted him to be our doctor. And he just felt like he's had to have had a baby that weekend. From 00:04:04 to 00:04:08 And he hadn't heard anything. So he shows up. From 00:04:08 to 00:04:14 And he went right to the nursery. That's what they were called, the nursery, because all the babies were there. From 00:04:14 to 00:04:20 They didn't have a NICU, per se. And there was little Kelly, four pounds, 15 ounces. From 00:04:20 to 00:04:25 And the nurses had been trying to get an IV. 15 ounces. From 00:04:25 to 00:04:30 So they'd been trying to get her an IV. Trying to get an IV. From 00:04:30 to 00:04:35 We had this Dr. Anderson who was a turd. He was no good. From 00:04:35 to 00:04:41 And he didn't leave very good orders. And the nurses were kind of mucking about. From 00:04:41 to 00:04:49 But the girls on low, Dr. Gennrich, because he was their doctor until they were like 18. Best guy ever. Best start of a relationship. From 00:04:49 to 00:04:54 He's still a long-term friend. Taking care of his dogs for years. From 00:04:54 to 00:05:01 See him frequently. So anyway, then Gennrich comes in and starts the ball rolling. From 00:05:01 to 00:05:05 He got the IV in. You have to put it in her scalp. From 00:05:05 to 00:05:11 And there are some nurses that were not. He's a very nice man, but he doesn't put up with incompetence. From 00:05:11 to 00:05:16 And so there was a couple nurses that were weepy. Because apparently you chewed them. From 00:05:16 to 00:05:22 But he came in our room, said this was all that had happened. That she was going to be staying in the NICU. From 00:05:22 to 00:05:27 But it wasn't the NICU. She was going to be staying there. You know, stay there for four or five days. From 00:05:27 to 00:05:37 So they did release me probably the next day. And it was really lovely that we lived close because we could just come over and spend a lot of time with her. From 00:05:37 to 00:05:43 I remember sharing the enix brought over the sheepskin. And they had called it a wooby. From 00:05:43 to 00:05:47 And we were able. After a movie with Michael Keaton. From 00:05:47 to 00:05:50 And I forget the name of the movie. Yeah, where he had to. From 00:05:50 to 00:05:58 And so that was a thing for babies. In the NICU, in the in the back and the kind of the although I don't know what you would call my yet. From 00:05:58 to 00:06:06 The heat. And so she had her wooby. They brought a little wood stock and Kelly was just so tiny, so tiny. From 00:06:06 to 00:06:11 I mean, her head was no bigger than the palm of our hand. Just very, very tiny. From 00:06:11 to 00:06:14 But she started to take off. Yeah. From 00:06:14 to 00:06:16 Once she got to go. Go nurse her. From 00:06:16 to 00:06:19 Yeah. She came home on Halloween. From 00:06:19 to 00:06:23 So that's the story of Kelly. That's the story of Kelly. From 00:06:23 to 00:06:30 And we started calling. They were having these Kebler ads and they call them the Pocano Kebleros. From 00:06:30 to 00:06:39 So they dressed them up as the Kebler elves were dressed up as little Mexican cowboys. So that was what we nicknamed her. From 00:06:39 to 00:06:44 So Aaron Aaron. So sort of a similar story. From 00:06:44 to 00:06:47 Yeah. This time. From 00:06:47 to 00:06:54 So I was I said, same thing. But I, how did that happen though? From 00:06:54 to 00:06:59 Oh, I went into the doctor's office. Close to her due date. From 00:06:59 to 00:07:05 And he goes, she's breach. And you were the same doctor. From 00:07:05 to 00:07:07 Dr. Dr. From 00:07:07 to 00:07:10 The string fellow. Same across the street still. From 00:07:10 to 00:07:15 And he goes again, you can't. You got to be driven across the street. From 00:07:15 to 00:07:24 And we're going to do what we call a version where they're going to turn the baby. Which is one of the least pleasant things to ever have done. From 00:07:24 to 00:07:27 And then they stop now. They do it again. From 00:07:27 to 00:07:32 So, you know, they, and they have to prep in case something was wrong. You were getting sick again. From 00:07:32 to 00:07:35 Yeah, I was getting sick again. So, you know, they do that. From 00:07:35 to 00:07:40 Aaron pops right down again in the bad order. First they gave you some drugs to. From 00:07:40 to 00:07:42 Oh yeah. They give you pitocin. From 00:07:42 to 00:07:45 No. First they give you turbulent. From 00:07:45 to 00:07:48 Okay. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:07:48 to 00:07:52 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:07:52 to 00:07:56 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:07:56 to 00:08:00 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:00 to 00:08:04 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:04 to 00:08:08 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:08 to 00:08:12 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:12 to 00:08:16 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:16 to 00:08:20 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:20 to 00:08:24 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:24 to 00:08:28 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:28 to 00:08:32 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:32 to 00:08:36 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:36 to 00:08:40 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:40 to 00:08:44 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:44 to 00:08:48 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:48 to 00:08:52 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:52 to 00:08:56 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:08:56 to 00:09:00 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:00 to 00:09:04 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:04 to 00:09:08 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:08 to 00:09:12 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:12 to 00:09:16 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:16 to 00:09:20 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:20 to 00:09:24 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:24 to 00:09:28 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:28 to 00:09:32 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:32 to 00:09:36 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:44 to 00:09:48 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:48 to 00:09:52 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:52 to 00:09:56 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:09:56 to 00:10:00 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:00 to 00:10:04 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:04 to 00:10:08 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:08 to 00:10:12 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:12 to 00:10:16 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:16 to 00:10:20 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:20 to 00:10:24 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:24 to 00:10:28 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:28 to 00:10:32 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:32 to 00:10:36 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:36 to 00:10:40 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:40 to 00:10:44 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:44 to 00:10:48 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:48 to 00:10:52 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:52 to 00:10:56 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:10:56 to 00:11:00 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:11:00 to 00:11:04 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:11:04 to 00:11:08 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:11:08 to 00:11:12 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:11:12 to 00:11:16 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:11:16 to 00:11:20 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:11:20 to 00:11:24 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:11:24 to 00:11:28 And then they give you some of the drugs. And then they give you some of the drugs. From 00:11:28 to 00:11:32 And then they give you some of the drugs. Well, Erin, of course, came out. From 00:11:32 to 00:11:36 Was a little blue. Had her cord wrapped around her neck. From 00:11:36 to 00:11:40 So quick like a rabbit, you know, he's got her untangled. She's pinking up. From 00:11:40 to 00:11:44 The nurse comes. The entire offer cord. From 00:11:44 to 00:11:48 Away they go. And all good. From 00:11:48 to 00:11:52 But she's always been a little different child. Sorry, Erin, but that's a fact. From 00:11:52 to 00:11:56 So, Lauren. And you know, Lauren and Erin are 16 months apart. From 00:11:56 to 00:12:00 So it was, close, really close. From 00:12:00 to 00:12:04 So things were going fine with Lauren. There was no problems. From 00:12:04 to 00:12:08 But by now I'd had both of my births induced. From 00:12:08 to 00:12:18 And I said to Dr. Stringfellow, I don't want to wait for this to happen. Plus, your due date is right around Thanksgiving day. From 00:12:18 to 00:12:22 And then it would bump onto my birthday. And I wanted this baby. From 00:12:22 to 00:12:26 And this time we did find the gender. And I wanted to have a baby. From 00:12:26 to 00:12:32 And we did find the gender. And I said, we want this little girl to have her own distinct birthday. From 00:12:32 to 00:12:36 Not Thanksgiving day. And not on my birthday. From 00:12:36 to 00:12:40 So he looks at his calendar and says, let's do this day. From 00:12:40 to 00:12:46 And I said, sounds great. And did he deliver? From 00:12:46 to 00:12:52 No, Schmidt again. I was going to say, what happened to Stringfellow? From 00:12:52 to 00:12:56 All of a sudden I'm trying to remember why. And he got Phil Schmidt again. From 00:12:56 to 00:13:00 Who had done Kelly. Stringfellow was supposed to deliver all of you. From 00:13:00 to 00:13:06 And he only delivered one of you. Under duress from him. From 00:13:06 to 00:13:10 But he only delivered Aaron. And Lauren was delivered by Phil Schmidt too. From 00:13:10 to 00:13:24 So the funny story about that is we had scheduled this delivery going to Penrose Community and at the same time Scott and Barbara Carpenter were living in Carter Springs. From 00:13:24 to 00:13:30 And Barbara was pregnant. And roughly the same timing as we were. From 00:13:30 to 00:13:42 So we're in the delivery room and Lauren's being born. And just as soon as she's born, the intercom says something like Dr. Schmidt room, blah, blah, blah. From 00:13:42 to 00:13:48 You're needed right away. And we said, gosh, wouldn't that be interesting if that were Barbara Carpenter? From 00:13:48 to 00:13:52 Sure enough, it was in Zach Carpenter. From 00:13:52 to 00:13:58 Their little boy was born 15 minutes after Lauren at Penrose Community. From 00:13:58 to 00:14:04 So you guys, you remember Scott Carpenter and my dad were best pals from Boulder. From 00:14:04 to 00:14:08 So he was significantly older than me. From 00:14:08 to 00:14:14 But we knew Scott and Barbara and we'd seen them and I took care of the dog for a while. From 00:14:14 to 00:14:22 But it was funny because they take the babies from you. But the dad in those days kind of went with the baby. From 00:14:22 to 00:14:26 Partly because we weren't going to let you out of our sight. From 00:14:26 to 00:14:44 So we go into the nursery area and I looked and there we called him Uncle Scott because when I was like seven, so when he flew Mercury, he was the third second orbiter of the earth. And so I said, hey Scott, blah, blah, blah. From 00:14:44 to 00:14:48 So Lauren and Scott were kind of tied together at the hip. From 00:14:48 to 00:14:56 Lauren and Zach. So Lauren, yeah Lauren and Zach were born like right next to each other and they never really knew each other. No. From 00:14:56 to 00:15:00 Actually, I don't think we've ever met Zach. No, but Kelly did. From 00:15:00 to 00:15:06 So when Scott died, Kelly went to the funeral, I think with my mom. Yeah. From 00:15:06 to 00:15:18 And since he was a Mercury astronaut, he had a big, he was a Navy pilot. So they had a big hornet fly over the church and my brother was there and they got to see Zach. From 00:15:18 to 00:15:24 So kind of close the carpenter loop. So those are the stories. Hope you enjoy those. From 00:15:24 to 00:15:30 Kind of long, but very interesting. Yeah. Not nothing bore. They were dynamic. From 00:15:30 to 00:15:38 They were all dynamic. And the nurses the third time it was like, we know how this goes. Please turn up the pitocin. From 00:15:38 to 00:15:42 Oh, they don't. It's time to get this rocking and rolling. From 00:15:42 to 00:15:46 They're slow. Oh, yeah. They're slow, but that's okay. That's okay. From 00:15:46 to 00:15:50 It all worked out. Y'all got your fingers and toes normal. From 00:15:50 to 00:15:56 Yeah, you were pretty easy deliveries. Yeah. Once you got ready to go. Yeah. From 00:15:56 to 00:16:00 So that's kind of it. Okay. So we met the wonderful Dr. From 00:16:00 to 00:16:12 Gennrich. Yeah. Dr. Schmidt. I actually hunted with string fellow in North Dakota one time. Yeah. So they were supposed to do all three of my kids, but you only did one with your kidneys. Don't he says, Oh, yeah. From 00:16:12 to 00:16:24 Yeah. I remember that. I'm trying to remember why he didn't do Lauren. I think he was out of town again. And Schmidt was there and we said, Hey, we know you too. So that's yeah, it worked fine. From 00:16:24 to 00:16:34 They were in I think we have a little toy wood truck that Schmidt I think we're two of them. So because he gave to all his new babies new babies. Yeah. From 00:16:34 to 00:16:38 Okay. I hope you enjoyed those. Yep. From 00:16:38 to 00:16:42 We know we've been blessed with the three of you. From 00:16:42 to 00:16:46 Yeah. And we remember a lot. From 00:16:46 to 00:17:15 [no audio]
